Hello,

I bought a set of weekender plans some time back but never built, due to multiple reasons. Money, space .......so on.

Recently I've been thinking about building a boat again, but want to stick with a plywood boat and wanted to do something along the lines of a larger rowboat/sail boat. I weigh in at around 265 lbs and want to be able to sail with at least two other adults so I want a large cockpit.

I had been looking for some boat plans but then got the idea that I may be able to modify the weekender LOA 19'6" plans. Taking out the cabin for an open cockpit. The very front of the boat could have a small storage area that would also incase the mast. Because the cabin would be eliminated I'd image extra (thick) bracing would need to be placed strategically.

Is this possible? Done before? Or a bad idea?

You guessed it, I'm all thumbs and know nothing about boat building, so if you think it would be to tricky of a project, let me know. Maybe give me a few directions to look in, for something I'm looking for.

Thanks,
John 10e
There have been a few people who elected to omit the cabin for more space. I admit I have pondered removing it myself. Some, like Angie, I believe, made a convertible. The modification seems quite rudamentary, so I think it will not be a problem for you. From your perspective, it may seem daunting, but in reality, the trick is...just don't do the cabin part. Cut the bulkheads down to the seat level, and stretch the splash combing all the way around.

Bill Paxton did a fine job on his open weekender.
John T. look at Kayak Karl's open weekender. Very nice open weekender. Bud. Smile
Welcome John, the Weekender is a fine choice for your project. Like Bud said take a look at Karls boat, it's a very fine example of what can be done with the plans. You should add your location to your profile and let folks know where you're from, there may be a weekender sitting in a garage or backyard just down the road from you that you could take a look at or maybe even sail aboard.

Thank you 8)

I was able to hunt down the pics of open boats and find other threads here on the subject.

Thanks again. Much easier than I thought!
Hey John

Here are a couple of links to previous post containing pictures of MY WORLD.
I was planning to install folding slat seats some day, until then the crew will just have to sit on coolers. The boat definitely has more room for crew. If you’re just gonna day sail there is no need for lots of storage.
I had to put 80lbs of ballast in the forward hatch to compensate for no cabin.
