I don't think they're really needed. My Weekender sails well to windward even in light airs.

Heel the Weekender to get the chine down and she'll point fine.
Runners only work on deeply immersed chines. Everything from battleships and aircraft carriers to the little square boats of Bolger can be seen with them. They aren't as effective as a real appendage, such as a fin or centerboard, but can help if you're lacking. Weekender is a boarder line boat in this regard. It has some bury to it's chine, but not enough in my opinion, to warrant runners and more important to have runners do something meaningful.
