Greetings all,

Ok, ... I have seen nose art on warplanes, and figureheads on ships, but what do you call this?

Interesting?  Yes I would definitely call that... interesting. ;D
Greetings all,

Oops, In the next video, they capsized their ice boat, as the water was not quite hard enough.

Interesting music choice ...

The landscape shots are the temperate zones of hell it appears . . .
I'd like to try that, I'll build a keel jig with teflon skids. We could attach it to Keith's Weekender. Then pour myself a rum, and watch Keith and Ryerson shovel off enough snow from the lake to sail on the ice. Whatta think guys, I'll save you a drop of rum when your done. LOL

Does anybody in North-America sail on lakes using skis instead of blades? I have been wondering this, because here in Finland the ice is seldom clear of snow. Most of the time there is too much snow on the ice for ice sailing, but if you would substitute skis for the blades you could sail on the snow as well.

The friction would no doubt be ten times that of the blades, but I think still a lot less than a hull in water.

I was walking at the marina yesterday and I noticed that there would be a lot of free slips for these ski-vessels  ;D

Some not so encouraging sights could also be seen

But overall, even the boats that have been taken care of are suffering from the amount of snow

I think this picture would work as a good advertisement for Yamaha. I bet that in Spring the owner just carries in the battery and the outboard will start like it had been "sitting under a palm" as we say in Finnish

I have an ice sled/boat I use with my power kites, very scary fast!

Greetings Timo,

I poked around on the internet and found only one example of skis on an ice-boat ...

... and it looks like the owner was using the skis to smooth out the ride over rough ice, not snow.

All the other references for using skis on an ice boat to sail over snow went something like ... I tried it once, and it worked great until you jumped on the boat ... or it sails great, but only in a gale ... I hope someone figures it out some day ...

So, probably not.

Cheers,
Tom
You would still need some sort of lateral resistance unless you only want to go down-wind.
I think canting the rear skis would be enough in the pictured yacht. I would probably prefer a rear-steerer though with the rear ski turning and the main skis closer to the CE.
