Hi guys,

I found some lignum vitae and was heading over to the woodshop to play on the lathe.

What dimensions for a deadeye do you think would look right on a vacationer?  I was thinking like 4 inches in diameter by 1 1/2 inches thick?

Does anyone have any pics of any they have made?  or perhaps a handy article on the making thereof?

Thanks,

Dave G.

P.S.: For those that are interested I have started my blog.  There's not much there yet, but I'll add photos as I move along:

I made some once for a 15 foot boat from purple heart, a very hard wood as well.  I never found any formula for this but made them in diameter large enough to get three holes in them of a size for the lanyards without making the holes too close to an edge.  The thickness was 3X the thickness of the stay line, which in this case was 6mm, or quarter inch, giving the thickness 3/4 inch.  Any more wood would be a waste I think and maybe look too large.  Your boat is bigger but hope this helps as a guide.

Thanks Brit and Ryerson.

The pics of aloha look good.

I think the 3 inch diameter looks appropriate.

yesterday I scored a 5 inch by 5 inch by 48 inch piece of lignum vitae from Global Wood Source in San Jose.  Nice folks and the owner is a sailor.  http://www.globalwoodsource.com

OMG they are like going into a candy store.  You name it they either have it or can get it.

Now to get to the shop are start playing on the lathe....

Cheers
Our old Deadeye plan addendum (from the original Weekender plans of the early '80's) is still on the web:

Might be a starting point.

Nice piece of wood David.
Speaking of hard woods I have a 4 foot 4x4 of tiger wood.  It is very heavy and very hard.  I have polished up some small cuts of it using oil and it finishes nice.  Would it be a good candidate for blocks or deadeyes?
