Here is a copy of a post from the Classic Plastic forum that I thought some of you might find interesting. It intrigued me.........

Here is a fellow who put together a nice chartplotter for less than $200.
http://sailingscamper.blogspot.com/2005/...harts.html

He used free software available here:
http://www.sping.com/seaclear/index.htm#PC

and free NOAA charts available here:
http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/Raster/Index.htm

A really nice feature of this setup is that the chart corrections can be downloaded for free on a weekly basis from NOAA, so that charts can be kept current at no cost, something most high cost chartplotters don't support.
Gee, thanks Angie. Tell me this AFTER I bought a plotter. Big Grin I'm really happy with my garmin, but that's a good idea. Wish I could use those charts with my garmin though. I expect someone will hack a way to use them soon enough if they haven't already. I have a chart card for the gulf ready for our messabout $35 on ebay from New Orleans to Tampa. Free would have been better but that wasn't bad.
See ya soon

Think the retail on any of the c charts is like $160 and they just go to the back of the store and burn you one. :? Could I at least get a kiss with that? $35 was a great deal.
It was fun checking out the Alaskan NOAA nautical charts with their on-line viewer. I even printed a few charts of a few favorite locations to use this summer.

Thanks Captain Angie
