OK first time builder here.

Is there a way to shorten the Fir order list on the vacationer? There are 7 different 2x@ and 12 different 1x@. For pricing out lumber is there a more efficient or shorted list? Could I combine different sizes?

Brian
Yes. Brian those are the finished sizes you will cut to according to the plans. The reality is that after the hull bottom goes on the keel you want to "cut to fit" as opposed to cutting to plan. I ended up with 5 transoms before I broke that piece of code. Little errors add up so that the 3' 4.25" 1x whatever is now a full 3.5' and none of the cut to print will ever fit. Look over the Bill of Materials and see where you can cut smaller pieces out of bigger ones. The wider planks are better wood as it comes from older trees. Cutting a 2X10 into smaller planks can save money and get you better wood in the long run. Also don't be afraid to tell your lumber dealer what you are doing. I have never been refused permission to hand pick my lumber. You can also scarf shorter boards into longer ones to use what otherwise would be scrap. This complicates building a bit but saves some money. I bought Saralee's timbers at an old family owned yard that had very good DF. Lowe’s out here in Phx has some nice DF in larger sizes and lengths so if you have trouble finding what you need try Lowe’s and cut bigger stuff down to what you need. The wood is the least of the cost of the boat so buy the best you can. I also recommend using epoxy to do all of your gluing. Happy building. 8)

I stopped at Morse Hardwood on the way home.

It says on their website they have Fir but the guy told me they don’t carry it. He would order it for me but after looking at the list I recompiled into easer to read form, said no. He wasn’t going order a bunch of different sizes. But he would call for prices on marine ply.

I was at the first in Vermont and just opened this spring Lowes this past weekend. I didn’t see any Fir and I’ve never seen it at home depot. But of course there is pine and poplar.

Brian
Brian I had trouble getting my marine ply. Then I found this place and I went with it, and I dont regret it one bit I got Hydrotek, which is merenti
(good stuff) they probubly have occume as well (great stuff).
Check them out.

Brian.
Anyone needing a 1"x2" should just use a piece of 2 by stock and rip off an edge. 1 by stock is .75" thick (nominal) and 2 by stock is 1.5" thick (again nominal). This means a 1"x2" is actually .75"x1.5" which is the same as ripping a .75" piece off a 2"x4" edge.

This is standard carpentry practice, especially in boat building where you can orient the grain the way you like. Another example would be to rip (saw along the long grain dimension) a 2"x4" at 1.5" so you can have a 2"x2".

It's much cheaper to buy longer and more importantly wider boards, afterwards milling them down to the stock (size) you need. An average white wood 2"x4" at Lowe's will run around $2.50. If you cut it down the center in both directions, then you have four 1"x2"'s at a much better price and quality then buying 4 separate furring strips (1"x2"), which will very likely be of a lesser quality wood.
I bought 2x6 fir, and as Paul mentioned, either cut my pieces, or glued them up for wide boards. Made the process easier for me, as the local lumber yard only carried lots of reasonably priced 2x6 stock, and a bit of 2x12 (real costly though) so I passed on that stuff.

Joubert Okoume is the highest quality marine plywood available today. Joubert Okoume is certified by Lloyd’s of London to be manufactured to the British Standard 1088. This lightweight panel is used almost exclusively for marine applications. The type of customers who typically purchase the BS1088 okoume can vary from the hobbyist boat/kayak builder to the largest boat manufacturers in the world.

Hydrotek is a luan based, multiply, marine grade plywood that is also manufactured in accordance with the British Standard 1088 for marine craft. The actual specie is Red Shorea. This panel offers some savings over the Joubert Okoume, but is a luan based product and therefore heavier and does not carry the Lloyd’s of London certification.

Aquatek is also a luan based marine grade plywood. This cost-effective marine grade plywood is great for structural applications. This product is not manufactured to the BS1088 grading standards; however it does offer few to no core voids, multiply construction, and a competitive price. Slight putty is allowed in the face and back to maintain a sound panel, and therefore is not recommended for decorative applications. Aquatek is popping up in numerous applications: Garage doors, decking, and amateur boat building just begin to scratch the surface of utilizations for this product.
