I called 3 places and this is what I was given for pricing in VT on marine grade. Does this look right?

Sorry the formatting got messed up. The second line of each quote is Thickness, quantity, individual price, price total. The last number of each quote is the final price.
I ordered 12 sheets of marine ply from Allied Veneer Co. They have a website but don't do online ordering. You have to fax them some information if you use a credit card. I ordered 6 sheets of ¼” and 6 sheets of 3/8” Hydrotek. With shipping from California to Montana the order came to $207. After looking around the net a bit there are some places a bit cheaper but several people on the woodworking sites I visit spoke highly of Allied Veneer Co. so I ordered from them. The wood is a bit heavier then okoume but on the small boat I am building it didn’t add that much and it is very solid.

One face was a bit better then the other but either face is good if you plan on painting it. The boat I am building calls for the 2 rear deck pieces to be cut from the same sheet of ply some one is the reverse side. After cutting them and lightly sanding the surface I was unable to tell which side was which. They didn't need sanding before I faired the small bondo filled cracks with epoxy and fillers so I sanded to get the pieces ready for glassing. Actually I think I read someplace that its not a bad idea to sand before glassing. There was only one small crack in the back of one sheet but both pieces got sanded lightly on both sides anyways. Hey I like sawdust. Not!

If you were to use this for bright work you would have to have the best face up and even then take a careful look because there was some bondo type filling on most sheets. Not a lot, just some small cracks filled, but still not something for clear display. I would order the Joubert Okoume if I were not going to paint it. Here is their price list as of about 3 months ago:

Joubert Okoume is the highest quality marine plywood available today. Joubert Okoume is certified by Lloyd’s of London to be manufactured to the British Standard 1088. This lightweight panel is used almost exclusively for marine applications. The type of customers who typically purchase the BS1088 Okoume can vary from the hobbyist boat/kayak builder to the largest boat manufacturers in the world.

Hydrotek is a luan based, multi-ply, marine grade plywood that is also manufactured in accordance with the British Standard 1088 for marine craft. The actual specie is Red Shorea. This panel offers some savings over the Joubert Okoume, but is a luan based product and therefore heavier and does not carry the Lloyd’s of London certification.

Aquatek is also a luan based marine grade plywood. This cost-effective marine grade plywood is great for structural applications. This product is not manufactured to the BS1088 grading standards; however it does offer few to no core voids, multi-ply construction, and a competitive price. Slight putty is allowed in the face and back to maintain a sound panel, and therefore is not recommended for decorative applications. Aquatek is popping up in numerous applications: Garage doors, decking, and amateur boat building just begin to scratch the surface of utilizations for this product.

Hope this helps. I went through hell trying to get marine plywood locally and finally took a chance and ordered over the net. I prefer to see wood before I buy it but after 3 failed attempts, to get it from local suppliers that promised but didn't come through, it was my only option short of driving someplace that has the stuff.
I ordered all my hydrotec from allied and they were pretty reasonable
and the wood got here pretty fast and was in good shape.

Brian.
When I built my boat 5 years ago, prices for regular fir plywood were, 1/2" 35.00 /sheet, 1/4" 20.00/ sheet. So that seems to be a good deal for marine grade.

Hey Brian, you probably don't need to purchase a full sheet of 3/4" marine ply. The only place you will need it is for the motor mount backer that's inside the lazerett. You could easily use any 3/4" exterior grade ply for that and you'll need less than a quarter sheet of it. You can save yourself $75 or so going with something from the hardware store. It's just a thought.
