I performed surgery on my mast box today. A nasty bit of work that is! As recommended by Angie on an earlier thread, I decided to open my mast box up so I could have access to the foot area. She said she did away with the box altogether and pretty much just has the foot at the sole. Makes perfect sense to me as I've heard it more than once that moisture does tend to form down there. Because I already had my box built and the work space is so tigtht, it's pretty hard to get any saws in there and I basically have a section in the front of the box removed. As it turns out I think I like this set up as I still retain any structural benefits the box gave me and I have easy access to the foot. If Iwere building this boat over, I think I would try to incoporate this or any changes to this area early rather than after it's built. Just a tip to new builders.
