I just glued and screwed mine in. I didn't need to kerf the stringer but it would depend on the wood you are using. It was an easy job.

I did a glue and screw also.
I marked out where the stringers would go, and then drilled (tiny) pilot holes down through from the inside.
I had my assistant hold the stringers back in place as I drilled my countersink pilot up from underneath (using the small holes as a guide,) then screwed from underneath.
I did have my assistant holding down the stringer using a block of wood thicker then my countersink bit just to be safe.

Thanks for the input. Now I know why these boats are fiberglassed....man they are full of screws!
