Full Version: your thoughts on rigging

Parts are beginning to show up in the mail, the coats of varnish are being applied to the spars, I'm trying to order sails from the Stevensons and I still have plenty of questions concerning rigging. Are most of you using stainless for the screw eyes and bolts? Where can you find a 9" screw eye bolt for the boswsprit? I'm not having much luck with that. I got a couple of cam cleats today which I expect to use for the jib and the peak halyard. Is there a preference on where you place these by the cockpit. Do people place these on each side of the cockpit or on the same side? Is there any advantage of one over the other? I also got cleats today. Is there a beddiing material I should be using for these and other cleats on the deck? And for running the leads for the jib and peak halyard back. I spotted these things called faileads at a couple of vendor sites. Do most of you use these to keep these lines in place? If so, is there a preference as to where you would run these leads? Along the cabin wall? Along the rubrail?
Being cheap, I'm using hardware from the local farm supply store for my rigging. They have solid cast eye bolts - not the bended ones you normally see. http://www.tscstores.com/

For the 9" eye bolt, I'm using a 9" bolt and an eye-nut that I got from my local industrial fastener place http://www.brafasco.com/site/Locations.html

Phil Gowans made some nice fairleads out of wood - I'm hoping to do the same out of some elm that I've set aside for the purpose http://www.messing-about.com/forums/inde...7#msg38507
I have been finding some of my stainless hardware at my local Ace hardware store but for the most part I order from Jamestown distributors
Heres a link to them, hope it helps...

Glad to hear it is all coming together. For your bowsprit eye use a cast galvanized bolt, you can find these at any farm supply place or marine place. It will have a solid eye bolt.

For bedding the hardware use Boat Life caulk, it will keep everything sealed but you can move things later if you decide to without damaging the wood below the hardware. Many folks use 3M 5200 or 4200 but it is a permanent caulk and over- rated in my opinion because of it's slow cure and difficulty in removal.

I like my halyards on the same side, then when you stow the lines you can make everything tidy without line being all over the cockpit. Yes, fairleads will be a big help to you. I would suggest you put them either on your cabin roof or along the cabin sidewall, you want to keep the decks as clear as possible. Line will roll when walked on and can toss you in the drink.

I would also suggest you use different color lines as it makes it much easier to ascertain which line is which, especially for a new sailor.

Good luck, it won't be long now. Smile
