James Sanders

Ahoy,

Maybe you're like the rest of us, not sure of whether to build a boat or not.
Recently, I ran across some words of advice and just thought I would share some of it with you.
Jim Trefethen's book, Wooden Boat Renovation contains these words of encouragement and warning—

Neighbors and other problems . . .
"Speaking of neighbors, let’s take a moment to consider what those who live with you and around you will think of your project. If you live alone on a farm, an island, or out in the woods, no problem. Otherwise, your spouse, your kids, and the guy next door are all going to take a keen interest in what you’re up to. Routers, sanders, Skilsaws, grinders, hammers, and other assorted tools of the trade all produce two common by-products— noise and sawdust— both of which can have undesirable effects on family harmony and neighborly relations."

If there are small children around . . .
"If your yard is the domain of small children, either your own or your neighbor’s, you’ll want to consider their propensity for being punctured or bashed by things commonly found lying around a boat project. Almost all boat renovations require ladders, and almost all children are born with the undeniable urge to climb them. If your project will require large amount of solvents, and most do, the local fire chief may be very interested."

Noah never joined BYYB . . .

"Despite all of this, your home is undoubtedly the best place to work on your project as long as you can do it without encouraging divorce, bureaucratic intervention, or the wrath of neighbors. After all, even though Noah had the support of his family and the approval of authorities of the highest order, history’s first and most famous home boatbuilder still had to suffer ridicule from the neighbors."
How true, Well Said,
Brian.
