Sheba is my name, commander of the sailing vessel Phoebus. My two-legged crew accompany me on numerous voyages sailing on Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay and North Channel.Thought I’d share a few experiences from a canine perspective.

Ahhh! Delegation is a Captain’s privilege. When the ship is running smoothly, a course is set and the wind answers to my prayers … I’m able to relax on board.

.

Someone decided this cobble beach would make an excellent spot for shore leave. Obviously, they’re not barefoot.

A few sailing pet peeves …

  • The crew’s obsession with looking at the chart
as soon as I’m sitting on it
  • Stretching out and getting my nose, or tail
    caught in the ship’s wheel
  • Tacking after just getting comfortable
    on the coiled jib sheets
  • And finally, cleats make good chin-rests.
    Tie those ropes somewhere else.

The foredeck offers a peaceful respite after a thrilling day of sail. Although it’s a bit of a squeeze getting past the shrouds wearing a lifejacket.

Black Lab captains wearing bright yellow lifejackets are easy to find in treacherous dark waters should they fall overboard … again.
